Becky Emmons - December 18, 2025: Rotary Exchange Student Program - Becky Emmons, a high school sophomore, visited Rotary this week to announce being accepted as a Rotary Exchange Student for one year starting in August. Becky researched the possibilities on her own, then made the application. She chose Sweden as her destination after studying the materials presented.

Christi Gubser - December 11, 2025: North Fork School of Integrated Studies - Rotarians gained insights about the program at North Fork School of Integrated Studies this week from its principal Christi Gubser. The general theme there is for the students to learn by doing as opposed technology-based presentation. Less screen time and more hands-on involvement is the theme. Generally, a teacher stays with a class for the first few years of education. Value is placed on art, music, movement, handwork, language, & theatre. They focus on and celebrate the beauty of children.

Kimber Rose - November 13, 2025: CAWS Shelter - Kimber Rose presented a program on the CAWS Shelter at our meeting this week. Caws deals with cats - Stray and Ferel cats as well as domestic cats and kittens. They trap, fix and vaccinate Ferel cats with the help of interested citizens in the community. The primary objective is fixing them and returning them to their neighborhoods without the capacity to generate more unwanted litters. Some services are available to families with domestic cats. Caws has a retail secondhand store on Grand Avenue that helps fund these activities.

Gianna Galvin and Dorothy Lorig - November 6, 2025: Families Plus - Rotary members heard a report about the activities of Families Plus from its Director of Outreach, Gianna Galvin and Therapist, Dorothy Lorig this week. Families Plus is an organization that grew in part from financial support of the North Fork Rotary Club. Its mission is providing direct therapy, and wraparound services for vulnerable youth and their families living in Delta County. Their work transforms lives, strengthens families and brings mental health services to our communities.

Tina Walker - October 16, 2025: High Country Spotlight and Shopper - Longtime resident Tina Walker talked to the Rotary members this week about her several years journey with the High-Country Spotlight and Shopper, starting as an employee and ultimately becoming owner. The Shopper began 37 years ago as a place for locals to place advertisements for businesses, personal sales and other activities. Tina told of its transition from a “buy/sell/trade” publication to a traditional newspaper which occurred in July 2022. This has changed its focus from selling stuff to telling stories as well.

Cate Wyatt - October 2, 2025: Wyatt House Mercantile - Cate Wyatt talked to Rotary members this week about her love of “nothing new” and “restoring old buildings”. Her passion led to the creation of Wyatt Houston Mercantile on Bridge Street in Hotchkiss. Located in a beautifully restored retail building, she and partner Heidi Houston offer thoughtfully created treasures, high quality pre-loved home décor and stylish clothing. Showcasing artwork is another opportunity offered for local artists and their followers. She invites us all to visit.

Tim Austin and Laurie Mitchell - September 18, 2025: Agritourism - Tim Austin of Fort Austin and Laurie Mitchell of Sage View Ranch presented a program on Agritourism this week. Agritourism is a concept whereby farmers provide space on their property for vacationers to camp or stay overnight in more formal facilities enjoying the experience of being on a farm. Not only does this give tourists a less expensive option for vacation travel, it gives the farmer a means of boosting their income from the farm. It also enables those whose lives are cloistered within urban boundaries to experience the activities that take place on a farm.

Terri Smith - September 11, 2025: Abraham Connection - Advisory Board member Terri Smith of Abraham Connection in Delta gave Rotary members an overview of that organization’s program this week. Their mission is to give food and shelter to homeless people. From early November to April 1 of the next year, a clean warm place to sleep at night is available to those in need. There are strict rules and drunks are not allowed. Separate male and female dorms are available. The intent is to provide a safe, warm place for those in
need.

Nicki Poulos - September 04, 2025: Paonia Public Works - Paonia Public Works Director Nicki Poulos presented an overview of that department and an update of some ongoing projects. She outlined the variety of community services under her purview which are Water & Sewer, Streets & Sidewalks, Parks, and Trash Collection. A current project is the re-lining of the 2 million gallon water tank which requires storing that amount of water in a temporary tank while the work is being done. She also explained the flyer “Garbage Service Updates” taped to resident trash cans last week.

Emily Hartnett - August 15, 2024: Valley Organic Growers Association
Emily Hartnett, Program Director for Valley Organic Growers Association (VOGA), spoke to Rotary members this week about their organization and its mission to promote sustainable agriculture by supporting and educating producers and consumers. Educational aspects are enhanced by way of its sister organization, Valley Organic Growers Educational Alliance (VOGAEA). They envision a vibrant community of prosperous, local farms that sustain and benefit the land by providing healthy agricultural products.
